The sun in open spaces behaves in predictable fashion, but city sun confounds. In the late afternoon it pierces small spaces between buildings, illuminates a wall and then rebounds in a startling dash of color onto an opposing building in otherwise full shadow. It shines on a wall far down a dark street; it peeks through a thin space between buildings, throwing a splash of light on a drab façade. Hard edge shadows create shapes on blank walls in new compositions. Shards of brilliant blue sky penetrate the masonry of city canyons. Sun washed reds are redder, yellows brighter, shadows deeper. 

 Night-light is another pleasure. High-tech big-budget lighting illuminates an entire building and the surrounding ones bask quietly in reflected glory. An obscured neon light reveals its presence by the glow that washes the adjacent structures with gentle color. Street lamps form diminishing curtains of light as they travel skyward. Lights shine on a low overcast cloud ceiling and it glows as if lit from within. 

 Times of day, times of year, smog, fog, clear skies, snow, rain, storms assure a constantly changing light show and material for a lifetime of work.
